The lion is often referred to as "the king of the jungle". It would be more accurate to refer to him as "the king of the veld" because that is where he reigns supreme. A fully grown male lion can weigh up to a quarter of a ton, and while they do have natural enemies in hyenas and cheetahs, lions are the apex predator of the African wild.
